What is BMI
The Body Mass Index (BMI) tells you if you are overweight, underweight, or right on target.
For Adults...
- A BMI less than 18.5 is considered underweight.
- A BMI between 18.6 and 24.9 is considered healthy.
- A BMI between 25.0 and 29.9 is considered overweight.
- A BMI greater than 30.0 is considered obese.
The BMI alone does not tell you how much fat you have. You may have a high BMI because you're a bodybuilder or pregnant (or maybe you're a pregnant bodybuilder).
For Children...
A child's BMI is calculated just as an adult's, but the numbers have different meanings because normal ranges vary by age and sex. A child is considered overweight if their BMI is higher than 85% of other children of the same sex of the same age. Because of this, you will want to use a percentile chart to determine if your child is over- or underweight

BMI Formula
To calculate your BMI yourself, you need to divide your weight in kg by the square of your height in meters.
BMI = weight (in kg) / height (in m)2
If you don't know your weight in kilograms or your height in meters, there is a long drawn out equation that you can use to calculate all of that, but a faster way to figure it out.
BMI = [ weight (in lbs) / height (in in.)2 ] X 703
