How Many Calories Do You Need

Page Updated on July 28, 2007

Total Calories

  1. Calculate how many protein calories you need per day. Protein in Your Diet Example: 291 protein calories
  2. Multiply the number of protein calories you need by 100 (required to calculate percentage). Example: 291 protein calories X 100 = 29100
  3. Divide that number by 15 (the ideal percentage of your daily calories that should be protein). Example: 29100 / 15 = 1940 calories per day (rounded to the nearest calorie)
  4. This number is simply an estimate of how many calories you need each day. If you are active, pregnant, young, or in a rapid state of growth or if you have a lot of muscle, you may need more. If you are older, more sedentary, or have lots of fat, you may need less (but it's more likely that you'll need more than less). If you need to add calories to your diet, you should try to add calories from whole grains, fruits, and vegetables to avoid consuming too much protein or fat.
