Types of ProteinsPage Updated on July 28, 2007There are two types of amino acids, essential and nonessential. Our body can make non-essential amino acids all by itself, but it can't make essential amino acids, so we must eat them (and we must have essential amino acids to survive). Complete Protein A complete protein contains all of the essential amino acids that we need.
Incomplete Protein An incomplete protein contains only some of the essential amino acids that we need. To make sure that we get all of the essential amino acids, we need to make sure that we consume foods that contain complimentary proteins, which when eaten together create a complete protein.
