Making Produce Last
Longer
Updated
November 24, 2007
It would be nice to buy fresh fruits or vegetables or pick
them from your garden and not watch them spoil. Here are some
ways of making your produce last longer through various methods
(from keeping them fresh to freezing them), and this will help
you save money that would otherwise end up in the compost bin.
Apples
Store apples in the refrigerator
Don't store other produce with apples Apples produce a chemical when they ripen that causes other fruits and some vegetables to ripen faster.
Bell Peppers
Chop it up or slice it as desired, store it in
resealable bags or air tight container in the freezer
Celery
Wrap celery in aluminum foil and put it in your refrigerator
Cut off the ends of limp celery, put it in a container, and cover it with water. Leave it in your refrigerator for several hours and it will firm right back up. If you change the water daily, you can keep the celery in the water much longer than you can out of the water.
Leafy Veggies (lettuce, spinach, greens, etc.)
When they start to wilt, soak them in cold water for 5 minutes, dry them off (salad spinners work great), put them in a bag
or salad keeper, but don't seal it shut, and put it in your refrigerator for about an hour and they should plump back up, then seal the bag
or salad keeper almost completely closed to keep moisture in but continue to allow air to circulate
Don't wash or cut your leafy veggies until you're ready to use them
Mushrooms
Sauté mushrooms and freeze in
resealable bags or an air tight container
Onions
Chop it up or slice it, store it in
resealable bags or air tight container in the freezer
