In Your Community
Get to know your neighbors (and keep on good terms with them). They'll help keep an eye on things for you.
Get active in neighborhood watch programs and other community groups. If you don't have such a group, call your local police station to learn how to start one.
Keep your neighborhood looking attractive. An attractive neighborhood brings pride to its residents, which has been shown to reduce crime. Help your neighbors fix up their houses and yards (free of charge or in exchange for favors only). Clean up vacant lots. Start a neighborhood garden.
Get to know the kids in your neighborhood. Pay attention to them while they walk to and from school or are simply out to play to make sure they aren't being bothered by bullies or require help in an emergency. (You can pretend to be cleaning your windows or working in your yard or garage if you don't want to look like you're being nosey.) You'll help protect the kids; plus, mischievous teenagers will be less likely to express their rebellious emotions on your home.

Remove all shrubbery and trees from beneath and in front of windows and doors. Intruders could hide in the shrubbery while he/she breaks in. An intruder without a hiding place is more likely to be seen and caught.
Inside Your Home
Make sure all of your windows and doors are locked (especially whenever you leave the house).
