July 28, 2007 Keep these items in a large hiking backpack or other bag that is sturdy, waterproof, and easy to carry. Make sure the bag is in an accessible location at all times. You should have enough supplies to last you a minimum of 3 days. - Cash
- Emergency credit cards (use only in an emergency to avoid finding out that you are over your limit when you need the credit the most)
- Extra set of keys (car, house, boat, etc.)
- List of emergency numbers and addresses
- Addresses and phone numbers of family, friends, neighbors, and companies you may need to contact (along with account numbers if necessary)
- Map of the local area
- State map
- Small battery powered radio
- Small battery powered flashlight
- Battery powered two 2-way radios
- Cell phone
- Extra batteries
- Identification cards
- Basic toiletries for each family member
- Energy bars and dried fruit (and any other ready-to-eat foods that don't require utensils)
- Extra prescription medications
- Extra prescription glasses
- Multifunction tool (Swiss Army Knife, Leatherman multifunction tool, Gerber multifunction tool, etc.)
- Lighter
- Waterproof matches
- Compact ponchos (or bring your jackets)
- Sweaters or sweatshirts (even in the summer)
- Sports bottles with water for each family member
- Copies of important documents
- First aid kit with manual
- Duct tape
- Notepad, pens, and pencils
- Supplies for your pets
If you have room, also include - Change of clothes for each person
- Sturdy shoes for each person
- Blankets or sleeping bags
- Extra food and water for each person
- Signal flare
- Whistle
- Sunscreen
- Insect repellant
