General gift certificates are perfect for people you don't know very well or for people who are very picky. They can use the certificate to select from a variety of products.

This is only a good idea if you know the person well and are sure they will not be offended or irritated by the service. For example, hiring a housecleaning service for your mother is only a good idea if your mother feels comfortable with strangers cleaning her house, and you're sure she won't take the gift as a hint that she needs to clean her house more.
